Adoption Process
Adoption Saves Lives
Your new best friend is waiting, let's make it simple to bring them home.
At the Wayne County Dog Shelter, we believe adopting a dog should be welcoming, transparent, and stress-free. Our team is here to guide you every step of the way to ensure the best match for both you and your new companion.
What Dogs Are Available?
We care for stray, abandoned, neglected, and owner surrendered dogs from across Wayne County.
- Stray dogs are held for a minimum of 3 days to allow their owners time to reclaim them.
- Stray dogs that are wearing a current Wayne County Dog License are held for 14 days.
- After the hold period, unclaimed dogs receive medical care and a behavior assessment.
- Once these steps are completed then the dog will become available or adoption.
- New dogs come to the Shelter nearly every day, so check back often!
Before You Adopt
Adopting a dog is a long-term commitment. Please consider:
- Time, training, and daily care needs.
- Financial responsibility (food, veterinary care, supplies).
- Your household, lifestyle, and activity level.
Our trained team is excited for the opportunity to assist in finding you the perfect match.
